Decorating Mistakes That Can Make Your Home Look Overcrowded & Messy

Decorating your home with your personal style is a great way add comfort and create an inviting space, however, remember to be careful not to get carried away and end up with a messy, cluttered looking space. Here are a few tips to keep your home from looking overcrowded and messy! 

• Don’t Use Too Many Colors - If you add too many colors to your home decor, you are guaranteed to make it look cluttered, and possible even messy.  I recommend using one or two hues and then combining them with some neutral colors to give the home a cohesive look. Adding too many colors is actually a common mistake made by many individuals when decorating their home without speaking with an Interior Stylist first.

• Limit the Number of “Trinkets” on Your Tables - This is a sure way to make your home appear messy! Putting too many items (even if they’re decorative accents) on your tables will quickly make a room look cluttered. Try to limit the number of accessories and then design the table’s decor in a vignette style (one grouping at a time). Try to pair pieces that you love with pieces that are functional. An example would be, a small decorative dish can be used storing your car keys. Group several small objects in a jar or bowl. This gives your design purpose as well as creating a beautiful look.

• Don’t Hang Pictures Randomly - Wall art and pictures that are hung without a thought of design will make a room look chaotic. Be careful not to just hang your pictures all over your walls. Group them together in a gallery type of arrangement. You will make the space instantly look organized and balanced.

• Don’t Put Too Many Pieces of Furniture in a Room - The biggest objects in every home is the furniture.  It’s important that you think about the scale and placement. Furniture that is too large for a room will overwhelm it.  Make sure your furniture is appropriate for the room, as well as the other pieces in that room. Also, it’s a good idea to have some of your furniture to “float”.  You don’t want to  place too many pieces of furniture  up against  your walls, as it hinders the natural flow of the room.

• Address TVs and Other Technology - Be sure to tuck away, electric cords,  and cable wires. Unfortunately, these “eye sores” are a must have in our world today, and most of us can’t live without them. But you can  hide them.
